Literature Text

When did you know it was over?
When the phone rang and there was no one on the line,
When I saw your cheeks flush
And your chest tighten
And your lips part
And it wasn't for me.

Where did you go?
I left the home I'd built
I left the ruin of my life
And went across the oceans
And went to a new world teeming with life
And went away from my memories.

Why did you leave?
I left because the love was gone,
I left to run from pain
And to give you back your life
And to not see you with him
And to set me free.

What have you done since that day?
I have slowed down
I have tasted the sky
And felt the wind on my face
And felt the sun on my back
And found comfort in solitude.

Who do you love?
I love my parents who raised me
I love my siblings who strengthened me
And the teachers who cared
And the friends who gave me hope
And I love you.
A poem based on my feelings about my divorce, nearly ten years on. I started with the prompt "write a poem based on a series of questions and answers." Given that my students had only fifteen minutes in which to write their poem, that was all I took, too. Sadly, I think it shows.
